Congratulations to Henry, of East Galesburg, for winning The CUB Voice’s Green Giveaway.
Henry’s name was randomly selected out of 253 CUB Voice subscribers who entered the giveaway in our summer edition. He wins $100 plus an energy efficiency gift of his choice: a solar cellphone charger or a water-powered clock.
To enter the giveaway, CUB Voice subscribers had to take this energy efficiency quiz. (The correct answers are in bold.)
1) Which accounts for 48% of a typical U.S. household’s utility bill?
A. Home heating and air conditioning
B. Clothes washing/drying
2) Using a ceiling fan and raising your thermostat 2 degrees in the summer can save you how much on your air conditioning costs?
3) A simple move like closing the shades on a sunny window can reduce heat gain by how much?
CUB opened the giveaway to everyone who took the quiz–whether they got the answers right, or not. There are many different–sometimes conflicting–numbers thrown around about energy efficiency. The idea of the quiz was to communicate that heating and cooling take up a significant chunk of most utility bills, and simple actions at home can reduce those costs.
